What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a system of medicine whereby very fine needles are inserted into specific points along pathways. The pathways, which are otherwise known as channels or meridians are the route by which Qi flows. Qi is an eastern term and is usually translated as ‘energy’ or information. It is the life force that animates all living beings.
When there is plenty of Qi that is free flowing and well organised, we feel happy and are functioning in a healthy way. However, Qi can easily become blocked or depleted, creating an imbalance in our system and over time, sickness can arise.
When a practitioner has a good connection to Qi, these fine acupuncture needles can be inserted into the body to help disperse any blocked Qi or to nourish Qi if it has become depleted.
In addition to very fine needles, the practitioner may use cupping, moxibustion or Tui Na massage to enhance the treatment, but all of these will be explained to you prior to their use and of course you may prefer not to have them and that is absolutely your choice.
Acupuncture is holistic in its approach and therefore treats all aspects of our being; body, emotions and mind and their inseparability.
